Since 2014, Ruukki Construction has used a real-time logistics monitoring solution in Finland, which enables Ruukki to improve the quality of their services. The monitoring solution has been implemented using the Celesta Plan and Celesta Mobile logistics monitoring applications developed by Identoi, part of the Sovelluskehittäjät Group.
“We are now able to send information about estimated delivery times to our customers using text messages. With Celesta, our logistics planners can always see the current locations of the vehicles of our subcontractors on a map. It is also possible to exchange messages with the subcontractors when necessary”, says Janne Latvala, Logistics Manager at Ruukki Construction. He continues: “This project has been highly successful.”
Logistics planning made easier
Ruukki’s logistics planners use Celecta Plan and the drivers use Celesta Mobile. The planners not only see the locations of all vehicles on a map in real time, but also the location of each vehicle on their specific route, including all of the delivery locations. The planners can also send up-to-date information on return loads and new pickups to drivers, along with other messages. The drivers use the Celesta Mobile online application on Android tablets and smartphones.
The solution has been developed in close cooperation with transportation planners and Ruukki’s subcontractors. The latest new features include electronic packing lists which are automatically stored in Ruukki’s archive after being electronically signed by the recipient on the screen of the mobile device. The new features also include electronic delivery reports which the driver can file for each delivery. The data from each report is automatically transferred to Celesta Plan, checked by the logistics planner, and then approved and sent to Ruukki’s SAP system. The driver or subcontractor can view the reports they have filed using their mobile device. The logistics monitoring solution Celesta Plan is connected to Ruukki’s SAP system via an online service interface.
Celesta streamlines drivers’ day-to-day work
Tehowatti is one of Ruukki Construction’s subcontractors and has been using Celesta Mobile since 2014 when Ruukki started using the solution.
”It did not requite any extra effort to start using Celesta. I have also had the opportunity to participate in the development of the latest version. It has been great to be able to give feedback on the solution from the driver’s perspective,” says Tehowatti’s Jari Toppinen.
Based on what Toppinen has heard, the drivers have generally liked the streamlined solution because it is simple and easy to use. In Toppinen’s opinion the greatest benefit of Celesta is the fact that it reduces the amount of paperwork significantly.
”We deliver and distribute metal roofing to customers. When including also all of our roof safety products, the total number of product items per delivery can be enormous. Because of this, the documentation has in the past required quite a lot of paper for each delivery, and there maybe as many as 30 deliveries per route. With Celesta, we have been able to halve the amount of required paperwork. Our aim is to make the entire delivery process electronic, and provide all of the delivery-related documentation to the customer in the future in electronic format only”, continues Toppinen. Tehowatti has moved to electronic accounting and is trying to minimise the use of paper in everything they do. Because of this, Celesta fits their needs very well.
Tehowatti uses the Android version of the Celesta application on tablets and smartphones. It is possible to call a customer directly from the app, removing the need for searching contact information and dialing phone numbers.
”Furthermore, because pickups, return loads and route instructions can be now be sent directly to the app, calling the drivers when there are updates to the route is no longer necessary, this has made our day-to-day operations quite a lot smoother and easier to manage."
